Primary Objective:
Prepares clear, complete and accurate design documentation to assist in the sale, manufacture and service of components, products or systems.

Major Areas of Accountability:

1. Works from notes, verbal instructions, sketches and drawings, or engineering specifications; consolidates the information to be used to prepare working plans, layouts and detailed drawings.

2. Reviews the design and helps resolve the details not completely defined. Determines the best combination of all the preliminary information and contributing data to develop the final design.

3. Develops specifications, designs or drawings using engineering principals, established MTS standards, procedures, and instructions.

4. Provides the required level of documentation for custom or standard projects. Specific tasks includes making drawings and parts lists using the CAD system and other computer tools, as required.

5. Reviews engineering drawings and supporting documents for adherence to MTS or industry design standards as well as for meeting form fit and function, e.g. verify freedom of movement between parts, etc.

6. Verifies completed work; checks dimensions, materials to be used, quantities, processing info, etc.

7. Coordinates with other internal departments (and external vendors) affected by design development. Provides scheduling, costing and technical information concerning the design.

8. Resolves mechanical and fabrication problems with designed or purchased parts used in a design.

9. Assures that any changes are documented and prepared in accordance with engineering change procedures and in a timely manner.

10. Follows MTS procedures, work instructions and guidelines in the design, layout, and documentation of MTS custom and standard products., i.e. ECN procedure, classification coding and retrieval system, CAD drafting and archival guidelines, etc.

11. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with all levels of employees.

12. Makes reasonable and sound decisions to establish priority of work to meet required deadlines.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:  High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalency & minimum Associates degree or vo-tech certificate in drafting, design, industrial design, industrial engineering, electronics or technical illustration and 6 yrs drafting/design exp; or

10 yrs relevant drafting/design exp.  Develops & maintains effective working relationships with all levels of employees.  Makes reasonable & sound decisions to establish priority of work to meet required deadlines.

CAD Workstation:  Integral part of design process.  Learns other CAD tools for marketing & design of systems.

Skill Level:  Applies highly advanced skills in area of specialization.  Has the ability to apply advanced drafting techniques & knowledge of practical, mechanical & fabrication problems.  May work with customers & vendors through CAD interfaces.

Level of Accountability:  Performs complex design assignments from work orders given.  May have responsibility for portions of a project or a project & may or may not have subjob responsibility, usually with minimal engineering input.  Follows, promotes, & helps train others in the use of MTS procedures, work instruction & guidelines.

Supervision:  Works under minimal supervision.  May provide work direction to lower level drafters on some phases of design.

Specific Accountabilities:  Prepares sketches or complete detail & layout drawings from verbal or written instructions on the most complex products.  Works independently on the development of original designs or adaptations requiring specialized experience.  Creates new or modified designs for new or existing products.  May also design major part of functional operation to facilitate manufacturing process.  May assist engineers in evaluating design.
