MTS Systems creates some of the world’s highest performance mechanical testing systems for our customers, including Formula 1 racing teams, automotive and aerospace companies and the world’s leading researchers in materials, biomedical and seismic testing.


As the Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team that creates customized software that manages the precise closed loop control of force and motion on hydraulically or electrically actuated systems.   These sophisticated test machines combine advanced controls, data acquisition, and hybrid modeling capabilities to achieve extremely high levels of simulation fidelity and performance in a laboratory setting.   The ideal candidate will have the ability to apply Systems Engineering principles, across mechanical, electrical and software engineering disciplines, in support of the software development team.


In this role, you will…


  • Be an advocate for software development processes, tools, and technologies.  Ensure that created software is robust, reusable, and requires little change over extended periods of time
  • Be responsible for the on-going management and development of assigned employees.  Create a culture that encourages innovation and personal growth
  • Manage the design and development of products, tools, and custom systems.  Assign staff as appropriate to ensure projects are complete on time.  Monitor design from initiation through delivery to ensure product design satisfies specifications and established goals
  • Provide feedback to senior management and facilitate communication on project status, justifications for variances and technical information
  • Collaborate with marketing and product management
  • Recommend process improvement programs including new methods and/or processes to improve productivity, efficiency, customer satisfaction, and cost
  • Collaborate with Project Engineers to ensure design for customer orders are satisfied on time, within budget, and on specification
  • Monitor cost center budget and take corrective action as appropriate
  • Stay current with and anticipate technology evolutions


To be considered for this role, you must have…

  • B.S. in Computer Science or an equivalent engineering discipline
  • Minimum of 7 years of software engineering experience (to include 1+ years leading engineering team)
  • Proven technical skills in highly-complex cross-disciplinary technical environments
  • Experience with complex real-time embedded systems
  • Ability to identify, own, and solve problems independently and as part of a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills


Additional preferred skill sets:

  • Good understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering – ability to understand how software interacts with other disciplines
  • Background in control systems theory preferred
  • Experience with ground vehicle testing or other test industries useful but not required
