As a Sr. Technical Writer, you will be responsible for creating user assistance for various enterprise software platforms. This includes responsive HTML5 websites, context-sensitive help, use-case solutions release notes, new product feature documents, video instruction, and system-level operation instructions




Primary Objective:

To design and produce standard and non-standard technical documentation in the assigned area(s) of

specialization. Documentation subjects can be electrical, hydromechanical, software, or a combination



Major Areas of Accountability:

1. Performs the prescribed department procedures as required to design and produce the technical

documentation for assigned projects. Process steps can include:

• Determining the scope of work

• Identifying or creating a documentation plan

• Researching the product or project

• Preparing a draft of the documentation

• Submitting the documentation for technical and editorial review

• Producing a final copy of the documentation

• Scheduling and publishing the documentation


2. Demonstrates conformance to established guidelines and standards for the design and production of

technical documentation as described in the prescribed technical documentation style guides, department quality management procedures, and other prescribed guidelines, standards, and procedures.


3. Meets scheduled completion date and budget. This involves:

• Scheduling and managing personal workload to ensure projects are completed

• Ensuring that resources and support services are available

• Keeping track of the project status

• Reviewing completion date and budget and recommending changes as necessary


4. Demonstrates ability to use the tools required for the job. These tools can include:

• Desktop publishing tools (MadCap Flare, FrameMaker, XML authoring tools, SharePoint)

• Multi-media presentation development tools (PowerPoint)

• Networking tools

• Corporate business and manufacturing information tools


5. Aids in the maintenance of department record-keeping. This can include:

• Creating and maintaining customer job and documentation project files (on-line and hard copy)

• Issuing job/project status reports

• Issuing workload status reports

• Creating and maintaining the job/project quality control records as prescribed by department


• Updating document part numbers to reflect current revision levels

• Assisting in the maintenance of departmental product/system document archives (online and hard copy)


6. Performs or completes other related duties or tasks as required or assigned. Examples are:

• Training staff

• Reviewing documents produced by other writers

• Providing product support/administration assistance


Education & Experience:


Bachelor's deg. in a technical field, communications or English and 5 years of technical writing exp.; or

Assoc. deg. in English or communications or a vocational-technical certificate in a technical field & 4 yrs. Relevant technical or communications experience & 5 years specific technical writing experience for a total of 9 years relevant experience.


Additional experience and skills preferred:

  • Experience with Agile software development, and work with Team Foundation Server (TFS) for work management and source control
  • Experience in a topic-based writing environment and with GUI development and software string management
  • Experience with HTML and JavaScript programming
  • Experience with user testing and content validation
  • Experience with software using PID closed-loop control
  • Experience with content localization
