This Senior Electrical Engineer position is a key member of the Electrical Development team at MTS Test & Simulation. Engineers in this team are responsible for developing and supporting a wide range of electrical products focused on high performance motion control and precision data acquisition. Our controllers enable MTS Test & Simulation systems to achieve world class performance, safety, and reliability for our customers' most challenging mechanical testing needs. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will provide technical leadership of all product development aspects from project scope definition to architecture design and formulation, implementation, test and release. Example responsibilities include electrical architecture, circuit board development, programmable logic design, and overall implementation of embedded hardware and firmware for control electronics and data acquisition systems. 

Major Areas of Accountability:

1. Embedded hardware engineering leadership of concept development, design, implementation, and product support of real-time control and data acquisition platform products

2. Low noise, high precision, mixed signal circuit design (data conversion, amplification, digital processing)

3. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA filtering/downsampling, Intel Quartus, Verilog, and SystemVerilog)

4. Leader of overall system architecture design with ability to present concepts to peers and leadership and generate confidence and acceptance

5. Digital signal processing and digital filter design, including MATLAB DSP Builder

6. Schematic capture & PCB design (Altium)

7. Embedded firmware and microprocessor programming

8. Defining and developing custom hardware/software interfaces

9. Digital Communication and third-party interfaces, including EtherCAT


General Responsibilities Include:

1. Participate actively in and seek out various educational and training opportunities to maintain up-to-date technical expertise

2. Provide leadership and significant input into Technology Roadmaps

3. Provide technical support for internal and external customers

4. Planning and estimating cross functional development efforts

5. Mentoring junior engineers

6. Interface with vendors of electronic components, key development tools and technologies

7. Provide technical support for Contract Manufacturing partners in production related issues

8. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives

9. Technical reports, presentations, knowledge sharing

10. Reviewing progress & evaluating results

 

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master's preferred) from an ABET accredited institution
  • 9+ years of progressively demanding electrical engineering experience(15+ years preferred)
  • Capable of performing 7 or more items from the list of major areas of accountability
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and domain experience in motion control and embedded systems
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and team effectively with others
  • Able to successfully handle ambiguity and make good decisions with incomplete data
  • Responsive and willing to take ownership of issues and drive solutions
  • Creative problem solver capable of developing pragmatic solutions when presented with conflicting requirements, business demands and technical risks/issues
  • Working knowledge of product development methodologies and stage-gate development processed

Additional Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills in both verbal and written form with ability to influence others
  • Use of CAD and embedded development tools
  • Understanding of agency design and performance standards to meet approvals such as CE
  • Embedded software design and development including programming in C and C++
  • Experience with Eithernet communication protocols, including real-time Ethernet technology such as EtherCAT
  • Experience with Team Foundation Server, Visual Studio, Git, MATLAB, TI Code Composer, OrCAD, HDL
  • Experience with Texas Instruments DSP, ARM CPUs, FPGA Windows based development tools

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel, both domestic and international, not more than 10%
