The Electronics Development Technician position is a key member of the Electrical Development team at MTS Test & Simulation.  This team is responsible for developing and supporting a wide range of electrical products focused on high performance motion control and precision data acquisition.  Our controllers enable MTS Test & Simulation systems to achieve world class performance, safety, and reliability for our customers’ most challenging mechanical testing needs. As an Electronics Development Technician you will assist engineers in design, build, and test activities in all phases of new product development and continuation engineering.  Example responsibilities include soldering and prototype assembly, developing and executing test plans, EMC testing and product certification, firmware regression tests, troubleshooting failures and maintaining the lab / test equipment.

Major Areas of Accountability:


  • PWA soldering, assembly and troubleshooting
  • Testing of products to meet environmental, EMC and safety standards
  • Functional testing of embedded control systems including firmware regression tests
  • Continuation Engineering support of existing products and annual agency certifications
  • Work with Contract Manufacturers (CM’s) related to test equipment and component lifecycle management
  • Responsible for lab safety, organization and test equipment maintenance & calibration
  • Writing test plans, executing, and documenting results per ISO quality objectives
  • Building / wiring of cables and test fixtures as needed
  • Ownership to deliver assignments on time and within planned budget with minimal oversight
  • Active communication and project collaboration to maintain a positive team environment


General Responsibilities Include:

  • New product development activities with the assigned engineers including prototype board bring-up and troubleshooting, measurements and analysis of circuit performance, EMC and environmental testing, regression testing of firmware features, product certification and release to production.
  • Continuation Engineering on existing products that includes diagnosing failures with the Quality and Production teams, lifecycle management and cost-saving initiatives on components, and answering overall technical questions on a variety of supported products and accessories.
  • Teamwork – Contributes to a positive team environment by valuing the ideas of others, working to resolve minor conflicts quickly, and demonstrating high standards for personal conduct and work performance.
  • Communication – Keeps management and project leaders informed of progress and needs for assigned tasks.  Communicates directly with production, engineering and procurement functions throughout the organization.
  • Schedule Accountability – Completion of work on-time, proactively addressing any risks or roadblocks.  Ability to work independently on assigned tasks using information available with minimal supervision.
  • Test Capabilities – Develops test plans as appropriate, verifying critical parameters and documenting the results.  Demonstrates ability to identify problems and provide recommendations for design improvements.
  • Continuous Improvement – Seek out tools or knowledge to increase test and development capabilities; examples include a proposal for capital equipment needs or improvements to processes and procedures.
  • Lab Ownership – Responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and functional electronics development lab and working with the metrology team for regular calibration of the test equipment.


Required Qualifications:

  • AA degree or 2-year vo-tech certificate in analog and digital electronics
  • 5 years relevant technical experience after completion of vocational training


Desired Qualifications:

  • Capable of performing 7 or more items from the Major Areas of Accountability
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and team effectively with others
  • Working knowledge of product development methodologies and stage-gate development process
  • Ability to read schematics and understand practical theory and fundamental design concepts

  • Proficiency using an oscilloscope, logic analyzer, and EMC test equipment
  • Strong organizational skills with logical troubleshooting to solve problems quickly
  • Familiarity with Altium, SAP, Silicon Expert and Team Foundation Server tools a plus
  • Experience with component lifecycle management and ECN process
  • Solid communication skills in both verbal and written form
  • Understanding of agency performance and safety standards such as CE
  • Experience with ISO quality standards and documentation requirements
